About the Real Estate Authority

The Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA) is the independent government agency that regulates the New Zealand real estate industry. Our aim is to promote and protect the interests of consumers involved in real estate transactions, and to promote a high standard of professionalism and service in the industry. Early in 2018 the REAA will undergo a name change to the Real Estate Authority (REA), rebrand, launch two new websites, and move to new offices within the Wellington CBD. These exciting changes, along with our fun and supportive team culture, add to the attraction of this role.

About the role/team

The role sits in the Legal Team. It reports to the General Counsel and is responsible for managing up to four solicitors as well as the day-to-day litigation and operational advice to the REAA. The ideal candidate will have proven skills in litigation management, the provision of high quality legal advice, and staff management and oversight. They will be confident and capable, and able to make sound decisions on complex legal issues under time pressure. They will be well organised, have a high degree of initiative and drive, and excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • effectively managing the provision of legal services by the Legal Team including day-to-day litigation management and high quality operational legal advice to REAA managers, staff and Complaint Assessment Committees
  • developing and providing training to Complaints Assessment Committees and REAA staff on legislative compliance and legal issues that relate to the REAA’s regulatory environment
  • demonstrating and promoting REAA’s values, including the ’Our People Matter’ philosophy of increased collaboration and alignment across the REAA and with key external stakeholders.

To be considered for an interview for this important role with the REAA you must be an experienced senior legal practitioner and hold a current practising certificate. You will have recent significant experience leading and managing a team of solicitors in the area of litigation. Ideally, you will have worked in a regulatory environment.

About the role/team

The role is full time and sits in the Legal team, which is part of the wider Legal and Policy group of the REAA. It reports to the Legal Services Manager and is responsible for providing litigation management services and operational advice to the REAA. We are looking for a person with extensive litigation management experience, who is experienced in providing high quality operational advice and is keen to mentor less experienced member of the team. They will be well organised, have a high degree of initiative and excellent interpersonal, analytical and communication skills. A real team player is essential.

Key responsibilities include:

Providing legal expertise to REAA Staff, the Board and Complaints Assessment Committees 

Effectively managing REAA litigation including Complaint Assessment Committees, Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal and Court matters

Contributing to the formation policies and practices underpinning the REAA’s activities, and ensuring that they meet the highest possible standards, and are rigorous, fair, and able to stand up to in depth professional and judicial scrutiny.

To be considered for this role you will demonstrate the following skills and experience:

5-7 years post admission work experience

An understanding of legal/regulatory/compliance functions and environments

Knowledge of the Real Estate Agents Act and its related regulations and codes (or an ability to gain such knowledge quickly).

Extensive experience in litigation management including the management of external legal providers

Extensive experience in providing high quality operational advice.

Proven ability to provide leadership, mentoring and coaching of solicitors and other team members.
